"If you can say the whole name, I'll give you a bottle of wine," laughs Anton from South Tyrol. Is that why he asked me as a greeting whether we were on a first name basis? Hardly, because the up-and-coming winemaker from Neumarkt at the end of the South Tyrolean Wine Route could certainly have done without the bottle - especially as we had arranged to meet for a tasting anyway. No: Anton Longo is the uncomplicated type who likes to laugh - even if he is by no means superficial or superficial in conversation, but often seems rather thoughtful. "The new, bright shining star in the South Tyrolean white wine sky" is what Heiner Lobenberg calls him, understating his appreciation - and the village community in Neumarkt often still refers to him as "the Baron". But Anton Baron Longo Liebenstein zu Wellenburg und Langenstein is probably just too long for them.
Before meeting Anton Longo at the winery, however, there was a meeting with his right-hand man Omar and around a dozen unpaid (except for board and lodging) employees of the winery - cute pigs. We met at the Schlössl for a basic course in Baron Longo wine knowledge: Baron Longo in Neumarkt (South Tyrol) has been on the market since 2015 and has been 100% Demeter-certified since 2024. The complexity of the wines, says Omar, comes from the combination of two very different vineyards. The main site lies at an altitude of 240-310 m with 18.5 hectares and diverse soils (sandy-gravelly, loamy, porphyry) and slopes ranging from flat to steep. A second, high-altitude parcel (2.5 hectares of vines) is located at 950-1050 m directly on the edge of the Trudner Horn Nature Park. Acidity and minerality come from the upper, cooler sites, fruit and softness from the lower, warmer sites.
Biodynamic cultivation includes cow horn preparations, compost and year-round free-range pigs (currently over 13 animals), which combat weeds and promote humus formation. Both traditional pergola systems (for old vines, 40-60 years old) and modern Guyot training are used. Many vines are 30-60 years old, but there are also younger and new plantings (including 1.2 hectares of white wines in planning).
