The Leipzig environmental protection association Ökolöwe has lodged an objection to the opening of Lake Cospuden to motorboats. The association has announced that it intends to exhaust all legal means against the decision. It is a catastrophe for the "Cossi".
The State Directorate of Saxony had permanently opened the lake south of Leipzig to shipping by general decree. The regulation is to apply to the northern part of the body of water created from a former open-cast mine from February 1. Previously, individual permits were required.
More than 10,500 people sign petition
The environmental protection association had launched a petition against motorboats on the lake in the past. According to the association, it was signed by more than 10,500 people.
The aim was to prevent boats with combustion engines on Lake Cospuden. Only soft drive types were to be permitted. However, according to the state directorate, it is not legally possible to exclude combustion engines from navigability.
Lake Cospuden is a popular recreational area. It is visited by numerous swimmers. There are also sailing boats, paddlers and a passenger ship on the 400-hectare body of water. The southern tip of the lake is off-limits to boats for nature conservation reasons.
