At the start of the new year, conditions in Saxony's winter sports resorts are quite good. In addition to the large ski resorts, the lifts are also running on smaller slopes. A number of cross-country ski trails are also groomed and toboggan fans can also get their money's worth. According to the weather service, it will remain frosty.
Multiple trails open in the Erzgebirge
The popular Kammloipe Erzgebirge/Vogtland is prepared for skiers, as reported by the responsible working group. The condition of the trails is good, but the snow cover is still very thin in some places, it said. The snow depth ranges from ten centimetres in Grünbach and Muldenberg to 20 centimetres in Carlsfeld and Johanngeorgenstadt.
The ridge trail stretches for around 36 kilometers from the Vogtland into the Ore Mountains, with several connecting trails as access points. It runs along the Erzgebirge ridge from Johanngeorgenstadt to Schöneck and has been awarded the title "Excellent trail".
Cross-country skiing fans can also take to the trails in the Osterzgebirge. According to the Altenberg tourist information office, several trails are open in the region - such as the ten-kilometre trail through the Kahleberg area and the Scharspitze and Wüster Teich circular trails.
Ski arenas and small slopes open
Saxony's largest alpine ski area on the Fichtelberg started the season the day before New Year's Eve - later than the operators had hoped after the mild weather in December. The downhill slopes in the Eibenstock and Altenberg ski arenas were open a little longer thanks to artificial snowmaking.
Those who prefer a more informal approach can also head for smaller slopes. Among others, the two ski lifts in Augustusburg are open, as the operators inform on the internet. The T-bar lift is also in operation in the Schießberg ski area in Crottendorf.
In Schöneck, the chairlift is due to open soon, according to the tourist information office. The small lift will be running from Saturday. You can also go tobogganing in Schöneck - the Hohe Reuth toboggan run is open.
It will remain wintry cold
It is set to stay cold in Saxony over the next few days. The German Weather Service is forecasting permafrost in the mountains. Occasional light snowfall is also expected. However, it will also be very windy in the mountains at the weekend. Squalls are forecast for the Fichtelberg.
