Many of the recent closures in the Dresden Great Garden are to be lifted from spring. Thanks to additional funding from the Free State of Saxony, numerous paths could be reopened from March, announced the Staatliche Schlösser, Burgen und Gärten Sachsen gGmbH (SBG).
800,000 euros for tree maintenance
The Free State has made an additional 400,000 euros available. Together with SBG's own funds, a total of around 800,000 euros has been mobilized in order to implement urgently needed tree maintenance measures more quickly.
"This investment is not a luxury, but a responsibility: for the safety of the people, for the preservation of the Großer Garten and for the quality of life in Dresden," said Saxony's Finance Minister Christian Piwarz (CDU). The additional funds made it possible to "carry out necessary tree maintenance work and at the same time ensure the safety of visitors".
Work has been in full swing again since October 2025. According to SBG, around 1,500 tree maintenance measures have been carried out since the start of the felling season and a further 1,600 have been commissioned. The reason for the closures is dead wood in the treetops or weakened trees that are losing their stability due to drought and disease.
Climate crisis affecting trees
The Managing Director of SBG, Christian Striefler, referred to the growing challenges posed by climate change. "The number of trees felled in the Großer Garten has increased dramatically in recent years." Despite higher investments in personnel, training and technology, the increasing number of necessary measures can hardly be managed.
In 2025 alone, 425 trees were reportedly felled in the Großer Garten Dresden. In order to preserve the historic garden monument, replanting is carried out regularly. In the fall and winter season 2025/26, around 60 new plantings, including oaks and lime trees, are planned or have already taken place.
