Saxony's largest alpine ski resort in Oberwiesenthal is set to open on Tuesday. The lifts on the Himmelsleiter and the Wonder Carpet are set to open, as announced by Fichtelberg Schwebebahn GmbH.
The "winter opening" had actually been planned for mid-December, but had to be canceled due to the weather being too mild. Frost set in over the Christmas period.
Skiers will also find open pistes in Eibenstock and Altenberg in the Eastern Ore Mountains. "We are in full operation", says the website of the Eibenstock ski arena. Ten lifts are in operation in Altenberg.
It is set to remain wintry in the mountains over the next few days. According to the German Weather Service (DWD), up to five centimetres of fresh snow is expected to fall on Tuesday night. Snowfall is also expected on New Year's Eve with slightly sub-zero temperatures above 500 meters.
