When heat and drought become a danger for wild animals, it's up to people: The Saxony branch of the German Federation for the Environment and Nature Conservation (BUND) is calling on people to provide water bowls on the ground to help native insects, birds and hedgehogs through the drought. The water should be changed daily.
Garden owners are urged not to mow meadows if possible and to leave them as shady shelters. Animals can also find moist food in fallen fruit left on the ground. Anyone who finds a dehydrated wild animal should quickly provide water and contact the local animal rescue service.
The current hot spell is affecting people and animals. According to the German Weather Service (DWD), June in Saxony was far too warm and dry. With an average of 18.1 °C, temperatures were above the normal value of 15.6 °C. On average, a third less rain fell in the state than usual. The DWD is forecasting very hot temperatures above the 30-degree mark until Wednesday.
