These weeks, the focus at Leipzig's weekly market is particularly on regional products with a wide range of strawberries and asparagus. And this will be celebrated: On May 16, 2025 from 9.30 a.m., the City of Leipzig's market office is hosting the traditional asparagus peeling event on the market square together with the International Kochkunstverein zu Leipzig 1884 e.V. Visitors can be there live as the asparagus peelings fly through the air.
The freshly peeled asparagus can then be purchased. Since the festival was relaunched last year, those involved have significantly expanded the concept. Professional chefs from the association serve dishes to match the theme: asparagus soup, asparagus tarte flambée or a hearty bratwurst. There will also be a matching wine, with the Prädikatsweingut Proschwitz offering exquisite wines for the right taste experience.
As last year, the cookbook author of the "Leipzig Kochbuch" Jörg Färber has announced himself as the presenter. From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., an entire cooking class from the "Susanna Eger" vocational school for chefs will also be on site.
The Market Office is once again taking part in the Europe-wide "Experience your weekly market" campaign with this event, which addresses topics such as regional local supply, agricultural production and healthy eating at over 500 markets in Germany alone. Appropriately printed asparagus peelers, sustainable weekly market bags and freshness nets will be distributed on this day.
The city of Leipzig operates 14 weekly markets with 20 events per week across the city. The weekly market on the market in front of the Old Town Hall is open on Tuesdays and Fridays from 9 am to 5 pm.
