David Raum is hoping that RB Leipzig will quickly learn a lesson after another debacle against FC Bayern Munich. "They showed us what determination and cool-headedness are all about, what it means to stick to your plan even when you're behind," said the captain after the 5-1 defeat in the top match of the Bundesliga. "We all saw a prime example of conviction there."
Leipzig were convinced before the game that the 6-0 defeat in Munich on the first matchday would not be repeated in the second half of the season. And yet, after two encounters with Bayern, they have zero points and a whopping 1:11 goals in the statistics. They will meet again in Munich on February 11 in the DFB Cup.
And then Leipzig should remember the first half of the Saturday evening game. They took a deserved lead through Romulo, but missed further great chances before and after. "You rarely see a game like that. In my opinion, we played a very good game for 80 minutes. What we lacked until then was being more effective with our finishing," said coach Ole Werner.
In the 72nd minute, Yan Diomande had the 2:2 equalizer on his feet, but Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer showed an outstanding reflex. Leipzig then fell apart in the final ten minutes. "We'll end up with another defeat. That can't happen to us like that, I actually thought we were more mature," said Raum and announced: "We have to talk about it tough, we have to analyze it and be very, very critical of ourselves."
Mintzlaff confirms Werner negotiations
The first 80 minutes will be taken into the upcoming tasks, emphasized Werner. Whether his namesake Timo Werner will still be a Leipzig player is becoming increasingly unlikely. Supervisory board chairman Oliver Mintzlaff explained on Sky that negotiations are underway for the striker to move to the USA: "It could be that the San Jose Earthquakes will be his next stop." The club is waiting for the player's decision.
