Kevin Kampl is ending his career as a professional footballer. The midfielder from Bundesliga club RB Leipzig announced the decision as part of his farewell from the Saxons in the 5-1 defeat to FC Bayern Munich on Saturday evening.
"It's clear to me: that's it for me in soccer in general. I won't be continuing. I'll go home to my family first, that's the most important thing," said the 35-year-old on Sky. He had previously said goodbye to the fans in tears. "I can't imagine starting anywhere else again either. I'll try to stay in soccer and do something else."
After a private stroke of fate, Kampl terminated his contract with Leipzig on January 31. The Slovenian former international had recently left it open as to whether he would end his career completely. Kampl played 270 games in the Bundesliga for Leipzig, Leverkusen and Dortmund. He played for Leipzig for eight and a half years, making 283 competitive appearances.
