RB Leipzig are intensifying talks with coach Ole Werner. However, according to dpa information, no agreement has yet been reached. The former Werder Bremen coach is to lead the Bundesliga club, which got into serious sporting turmoil last season, back to its former strength. The start of training is planned for July 14 at Cottaweg.
The 37-year-old Werner had coached Bremen since 2021. After the end of the season, however, he informed Werder that he did not want to extend his contract, which expires in 2026. The Green-Whites announced his departure a day later. Leipzig officials have not yet entered into talks with Werder regarding a transfer fee in the millions. Before that, the focus is on reaching an agreement with Werner.
Many names, many speculations
Leipzig want to return to the RB philosophy after a disastrous season that ended in seventh place. Without an international starting place - for the first time in the Bundesliga history of the Saxons - there may even be a unique opportunity to do so. Coach Marco Rose was suspended in March. Interim coach Zsolt Löw then tried in vain to get the team on course for the top flight.
In addition to Werner, Cesc Fàbregas (Como), Oliver Glasner (Crystal Palace) and Roger Schmidt (most recently Benfica Lisbon) were also previously in discussion for the head coach position. Even Davide Ancelotti, son and assistant coach of long-time Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti, was one of the candidates according to speculation. Most recently, the Dane Jacob Neestrup from FC Copenhagen was ruled out as a possible new coach because the Danes did not give the coach permission to terminate his contract early.
