Derby lost, series broken, slipped down the table again: The clash against Dynamo Dresden did not go according to plan for 1. FC Magdeburg. After five unbeaten games in a row, the Blue & Whites conceded a 2:1 defeat and thus remain stuck in the relegation battle.
"In the end, it was too easy to score against us twice. I look unfortunate when I conceded both goals - the first one was crossed in where I sailed past and the second one I wiped the ball in such a way that it fell at the feet of the opponent," said FCM captain and goalkeeper Dominik Reimann, annoyed about the goals conceded. FCM had taken the lead through Mateusz Zukowski's sixth goal of the season after a strong opening phase from the visitors.
Zukowski's sixth goal was not enough
"You have to manage this lead better and play better. You can't lose concentration in set-pieces," analyzed Magdeburg coach Petrik Sander. Dynamo equalized after a corner, from which the Blue & Whites conceded several goals, and then took the lead before the break after a poorly defended free-kick.
After the break, FCM had opportunities to equalize, but Zukowski missed them, as did Marcus Mathisen in the closing stages. Even though Magdeburg once again conceded points through weak standard defending, they will not be deterred from their path in Saxony-Anhalt.
Long-standing lack of concentration before conceding goals
"We're not going to get out the club and hit the team. We'll have to evaluate this and get back to business relatively quickly because the next game is just around the corner," emphasized Sander. On Friday, FCM will host Hannover 96 with former coach Christian Titz. It will be interesting to see how the former successful coach is received at his old place of work, as the separation was unusually tough.
The Magdeburg side will face a different challenge against the quick Hanoverians with their dangerous transitional play if they are to pick up important points in the relegation battle. To do so, they will need more concentration in set pieces and more power in tackles.
