A routine task completed: Second-division Magdeburg easily advanced to the second round of the DFB Cup with a win over fifth-division Bahlinger SC. It wasn't just striker Zukowski who scored twice.

1. FC Magdeburg advanced effortlessly to the second round of the DFB Cup. The second-division soccer team defeated Oberliga club Bahlinger SC 4-0 (3-0). Goal scorers Mateusz Zukowski (5th and 44th minutes) and Falko Michel (31st and 77th) scored the goals for coach Petrik Sander’s team in front of 3,545 spectators at the Kaiserstuhlstadion.

The South Baden Cup champion proved to be a gracious host. First, the stadium sound system played “Heja, heja – Wir sind vom FCM,” and around 800 Magdeburg fans sang along cheerfully. Then Bahlingen’s center back, Laurin Tost, handed out a gift even on the bumpy turf when he missed the ball after five minutes of play. Zukowski, lurking behind him, gratefully finished the play.

Bahlingen had good chances, but Reimann made strong saves

A header by Michel and another goal by Zukowski—who beautifully placed the ball into the corner from about 16 meters—sealed the deal by halftime. The three-division gap was most evident in the teams’ ability to convert chances. The offensively strong Bahlingen side, driven by playmaker Hasan Pepic, squandered a total of four good opportunities, partly because FCM goalkeeper Dominik Reimann made three strong saves.

After the break, Magdeburg comfortably managed the lead against a Bahlingen side whose energy was waning. While Zukowski narrowly missed scoring his third goal twice, Michel also netted a brace to make it 4-0. Former Karlsruhe player Roko Simic made his debut in an FCM jersey after coming on as a substitute just over an hour into the game. The forward did not make any notable plays.
