The RB Leipzig women's soccer team started the new Bundesliga year with a defeat at FC Bayern Munich. The team in eleventh place in the table lost 0:3 (0:1) at the German champions. In wintry conditions with driving snow, Momoko Tanikawa gave Bayern a quick lead with a penalty in the sixth minute. No further goals were scored until the break in adverse pitch conditions.
In the second half, Franziska Kett (67) and Jovana Damnjanovic (69), who had come on as substitutes shortly beforehand, made sure of that. Kett's deflected shot was saved by Kyra Spitzner just before the goal line, but Damnjanovic dusted it off a little later to seal the win. The Champions League quarter-finalists are still unbeaten in the Bundesliga this season and have now won 14 of their 15 games.
HSV win basement duel against Essen
Hamburger SV won the clash of relegation candidates against SGS Essen 2:1 (0:0) at home. Sophie Hillebrand converted a penalty in stoppage time (90.+3) to ensure that the HSV women moved past Essen into twelfth place. Leipzig are still three points ahead of Hamburg and four ahead of Essen, who are now penultimate.
