Leipzig's managing director Marcel Schäfer has found clear words after missing out on Champions League qualification and announced a major shake-up. "A performance like that is not worthy of a Champions League contender," said Schäfer after the lucky 0-0 draw in the Bundesliga at Werder Bremen, which means the Saxons no longer have a chance of fourth place.
"We missed too many things again today that are needed to really be at the top. I maintain that we are rightly where we are," said Schäfer, who now faces a busy summer. "It's a real challenge, both in sporting and economic terms," said Schäfer.
Leipzig facing upheaval
"But I also see it as an opportunity. Because we are now changing things that we have already seen." The aim is to "tackle the plans with all consistency and also implement them" in order to put together a "real RB team" again.
On the last matchday against VfB Stuttgart, Leipzig, for whom the departure of coach Marco Rose did not have the desired effect, will be looking to at least qualify for the Europa League. "Then we'll just win the Europa League title," said Christoph Baumgartner defiantly.
Not playing internationally during the week and just watching is "the shittiest thing there is," said the Austrian. Currently seventh in the table, Leipzig would not even qualify for the UEFA Conference League.
