The upturn is still a long time coming for many craft businesses. Their assessment of their business situation is correspondingly negative. The situation is particularly difficult in one sector.

The skilled trades sector in south-west Saxony continues to miss signs of a new dawn from politicians and is pessimistic about the future. According to a new economic survey by the Chemnitz Chamber of Crafts, almost all sectors rate their current situation as rather poor. The situation in the main construction and finishing trades is particularly difficult. In the construction sector, both private and commercial clients are currently holding back, as is the public sector.

According to the information provided, more than 600 companies took part in the spring survey. The resulting business climate index is roughly as low as it was in 2009 shortly after the financial crisis,

These are the demands on politicians

"There is a great danger that this crisis will continue to worsen, as the trend has continued since 2020," explained Chamber President Frank Wagner. The reasons for the malaise are manifold. State and federal politicians must quickly set the course for an upturn, he warned. This includes a sustainable reduction in bureaucracy, tax relief and investment in infrastructure. "All of this can also be implemented in the short term and should therefore be at the top of the priority list."
