There is a lack of company successors in Saxony - and this is also having an impact on master craftsmen's businesses. According to the Saxon Crafts Day, there were around 36,800 businesses requiring registration at the end of last year, almost two per cent fewer than at the end of 2024.
The craft businesses are being closed down due to age - and there is a lack of people who want to continue running them. According to the Handwerkstag, around 19,000 businesses are due to be handed over in the next ten years. Almost 78,000 jobs depend on this.
Weak economy makes it difficult to find a successor
There are declines in many trades, especially in tiling, construction, plumbing, painting and varnishing. Due to the weak economy, it is becoming increasingly difficult to find a successor, according to the Handwerkstag.
In contrast, according to the Handwerkstag, there was growth in trades that do not require a master craftsman's certificate to set up a business. Cosmetics and photography were particularly popular last year. "The trend here is to turn your hobby and passion into a profession." Those who decide to do so often start out as a sideline.
