Radebeul primary school children were able to ask a real representative of the Lakota tribe from North America before the 32nd Karl May Festival (May 30 to June 1) this coming weekend. Nuvassie Blacksmith, wearing blue jeans, a shirt and a traditional necklace, showed the children how he drums, told them about his life and how he measures his strength against bulls as a successful rodeo. According to the city administration, he comes from a traditional indigenous family - and will be a guest at other schools during this year's festival.
The aim is to give schools an authentic insight into the culture, history, lifestyle and challenges of indigenous peoples, according to the city as the organizer of the festival. This should help to "dispel many a cliché", deepen understanding for respectful intercultural encounters and "create an awareness of the social and ecological living conditions of the Lakota in South Dakota and the Navajo in Arizona".
