The Lord Mayor of Chemnitz, Sven Schulze, is traveling to the new European Capital of Culture Oulu in Finland this weekend. Together with a delegation, the SPD politician will take part in the opening ceremony for the 2026 Capital of Culture year, as announced by the city administration. Chemnitz held the title of European Capital of Culture last year - as did Nova Gorica in Slovenia.
There has been an intensive exchange between the Saxon city and the EU's northernmost city for several years, it was reported. There have been joint cultural projects and cooperation is also planned for the future. In addition to Oulu, the Slovakian city of Trencin can also call itself European Capital of Culture this year.
