The decision of the Görlitz district council to ban advertising for the German Armed Forces is unlawful. The district must revoke the decision at its next but one meeting at the latest, according to the Saxony State Directorate.
The legal supervisory authority is of the opinion that such a ban on advertising does not fall within the jurisdiction of the district. A ban on advertising would also violate the fundamental economic neutrality of the state and the principle of equal treatment.
The district council passed the advertising ban on December 10, 2025. District Administrator Stephan Meyer (CDU) had objected to the decision and submitted the matter to the state directorate for review.
A similar case had previously occurred in Zwickau. There, the city council had decided to ban advertising. This decision also had to be withdrawn by the local parliament following a legal review.
