The Wechselburg castle park is getting a new Weymouth pine. The tree is intended as a replacement for the more than 200-year-old fellow tree that fell over in a storm two years ago. "Wechselburg Castle Park is a cultural and historical gem and is also a valuable habitat for many strictly protected animals and plants," explained Robert Clemen, Director of the Saxon State Foundation for Nature and the Environment, which manages the park.
The third Saxon Park Seminar opens tomorrow with the planting of the Weymouth pine. Maintenance work in the park is planned for Friday and Saturday, with excursions on the program for Sunday. The 18-hectare castle park surrounds the castle and the late Romanesque basilica of Wechselburg. It was created around 1830 in the style of an English landscape park. The park is currently part of a federally funded program to "adapt urban and rural areas to climate change".
