The scientific wolf monitoring program in Saxony has also brought a wolf in Saxony-Anhalt to the attention of experts. According to the State Office for the Environment, Agriculture and Geology in Dresden, a male wolf pup got caught in a net fence near Beilrode in the district of North Saxony a few days before Christmas. The animal, which was given the abbreviation MT16, was fitted with a collar transmitter and has since been staying exclusively in Saxony-Anhalt in the Annaburger Heide. Genetic samples should now provide information as to whether it is a pup of the local "Annaburger Heide" pack.
On Boxing Day, the wolf caused a stir when it was apparently foraging on a farm in the Jessen area and could only be chased away after a long time. The responsible Wolf Competence Center Iden of the Saxony-Anhalt State Office for Environmental Protection is currently examining further measures.
Wolf monitoring is carried out on behalf of the Saxony State Environmental Agency by the Senckenberg Museum of Natural History in Görlitz and the Lupus Institute for Wolf Monitoring and Research in Germany. Radio telemetry is common in wildlife research. A collar transmitter is attached to the wolf under anaesthetic. This allows the location of the animal to be localized without having to disturb it.
