Cities such as Chemnitz, Erfurt and Rostock collect millions of euros from traffic violations. Mobile measuring trailers are being used more and more frequently.

According to a survey, at least five eastern German cities collected millions of euros in fines from speeders last year. In Chemnitz, speeding and red light violations brought in around 7.3 million euros. This is the second-highest revenue of all cities surveyed after Hamburg (47 million euros), according to a survey by the traffic law working group of the German Bar Association. According to the information, 41 cities across Germany took part in the survey - 12 cities such as Dresden and Jena do not wish to have their data published.

According to the survey, the Thuringian state capital Erfurt collected 5.6 million euros in fines last year, Weimar 2.6 million euros, Rostock 3.4 million euros and Frankfurt/Oder 1.4 million euros. Apart from Rostock, only Erfurt increased its revenue in 2024. All other eastern German cities achieved roughly the same level as the previous year or saw a drop in revenue, it was reported.

According to the information, there are 86 stationary and 39 mobile facilities in the nine eastern German cities that took part in the survey. Compared to previous surveys, the number of mobile systems in particular has increased in most cities. This is due to the increasing use of measuring trailers, which can surprise drivers at new locations in the cities. In Chemnitz, for example, around six million euros were collected with mobile speed cameras. In Erfurt, 68,818 vehicles and in Weimar around 65,000 were flashed with mobile and stationary systems.
