The number of accidents involving trucks on Saxony's freeways fell last year. In 2024, 2,000 accidents were recorded, as Saxony's Ministry of the Interior announced on request. In the previous year 2023, there were significantly more such accidents with around 2,600. In 2022, just under 2,400 accidents were recorded.
The number of fatalities also fell. While three deaths were recorded last year following accidents involving trucks, there were nine deaths in 2023 and twelve in 2022.
A4 most affected
According to the ministry, the most affected by far is the Autobahn 4, which is considered the busiest transit route and connects western and eastern Germany. In 2024, almost half of all accidents involving trucks in Saxony occurred on this highway (944 accidents).
Accidents were also relatively frequent on the A14 (418 accidents) and the A72 (313 accidents). In previous years, these three freeway sections were also the most affected.
Controls for greater safety
According to the Saxon Ministry, in addition to road construction, police traffic control measures in particular contribute to greater road safety on the freeways. "These include, for example, speed and distance checks as well as special checks on commercial passenger and goods traffic," said the ministry.
Last year, the police checked more than 23,000 vehicles in commercial passenger and goods traffic, such as buses, cabs and transport vehicles. This was 15 percent more than in the previous year.
