Buffer or soup? Many Berliners will be asking themselves this question more often now. Tons of potatoes have arrived from a rescue operation in Saxony and need to be distributed and processed.

Tons of potatoes from a free distribution campaign in Saxony have arrived in Berlin and are being distributed these days. Numerous recipients in the capital have volunteered as distribution points.

Recipes on social media

The Berliner Tafel alone took 22 tons, as spokeswoman Tabea Pauli reported. "The potatoes are being distributed to our 48 distribution points and around 400 social institutions," reported Pauli. This could take two to three weeks, but is not a problem due to the shelf life of the vegetables. The Tafel will publish tips for potato recipes on its social media channels, said Pauli.

The potatoes come from Osterland Agrar Gesellschaft south of Leipzig, which was left with 4,000 tons. To save the potatoes from spoiling, the internet search engine Ecosia and the Berliner Morgenpost newspaper are distributing them free of charge in Berlin. The agricultural company donated them, Ecosia organized the transport to the capital and the newspaper organized the distribution.

Potatoes distributed quickly in places

A trader had ordered the harvest, but when the vegetables were stored, it was clear that the supply on the market was greater than the demand. The price had therefore fallen so sharply that it was no longer profitable for the retailer to sell. This left the producer sitting on the harvest, according to the organizers of the campaign.
