The German cup winners welcome an old acquaintance. The new sports director is set to take over the MBC's business completely by the end of the year.

Basketball Bundesliga club Syntainics MBC can announce a sporting coup with the return of Silvano Poropat. In the restructuring of the MBC management level, the long-time head coach will become the new sports director at the German cup winners. Following the departure of managing partner Martin Geissler on December 31, 2025, the club will be managed by two people in future. A commercial director is still being sought.

"With Silvano Poropat, we were able to sign our absolute preferred candidate for the sporting management. Silvano is an experienced basketball expert who is recognized throughout Europe and who also knows the league and - even more importantly - the opportunities here in Weißenfels inside out. Together with Silvano and Head Coach Marco Ramondino, I will put together the squad for the new season," said Geissler, adding: "All in all, I am reassured that I can place my successor in proven hands."

Fixed-term contract

Poropat made his commitment for an indefinite period, according to the MBC statement. He will take up his position in Weißenfels at the beginning of August and accompany the team to its annual training camp in Zrece (Slovenia). The 54-year-old Croatian will take over responsibility from Geissler step by step until the end of the year.

Poropat had shaped an era in Weißenfels basketball as head coach. He coached the Wolves intermittently from 2011 to 2021. In 2012, he managed to get the team promoted back to the ProA Bundesliga at the first attempt. In the 2013/14 season, the Croatian led the MBC to ninth place in the table and was voted "Coach of the Year". After leaving in December 2015, he returned in January 2019 and managed to keep the team in the league. He made a second return in February 2020 and led the Wolves to 15th place in the difficult season during the 2020/21 coronavirus pandemic.
