The SC DHfK Leipzig handball team has suffered another setback in the Bundesliga. The team coached by Frank Carstens lost 29:34 (16:18) to Frisch Auf Göppingen in front of their home crowd on Thursday evening and thus missed out on a non-relegation place. Dean Bombac, who had extended his contract by a year before the game regardless of the league, and Lukas Binder were the best scorers for SC DHfK, who remain bottom of the table with 10:44 points, with six goals each.
The Leipzig club got off to a courageous start and initially hardly allowed Göppingen to make any clear-cut shots, but were hardly able to capitalize on them in attack because they missed many chances recklessly. The pace picked up considerably from the middle of the first half. The home side revealed problems in pulling back and was unable to find a way past Göppingen's left wing Marcel Schiller, who scored twelve of his total of 16 goals up to the break.
After the break, Leipzig fought back to tie the scores at 21:21 with three goals in succession (41'), but was not able to seize the momentum. Technical mistakes and two missed seven-meter penalties destroyed the home side's fragile self-confidence and it trailed 25:29 by the 49th minute. Although Carstens' players did not give up, they were no longer able to get within striking distance.
