Several thousand people in Saxony are infected with HIV. Why Social Minister Köpping demands respect in dealing with those affected.

More than 3,000 people in Saxony are living with an HIV infection. This was announced by the Ministry of Social Affairs on the occasion of World AIDS Day on December 1. At the end of last year, more than 2,800 people were diagnosed with HIV infection or AIDS. The Robert Koch Institute also estimates that around 460 people were unaware of their infection at the time.

Every year, people die in Saxony due to HIV infection. According to official statistics, nine deaths were registered in 2023 and seven in 2022. These figures were not yet available for 2024.

Health Minister Petra Köpping (SPD) explained that World AIDS Day is a reminder to treat those affected in Saxony with respect. With timely diagnosis and modern therapies, a long life with HIV is possible.

The four AIDS service organizations in Saxony receive up to 570,000 euros in annual funding from the Free State. The Ministry of Social Affairs sees a clear mandate to further facilitate testing services and expand low-threshold access.
