When hundreds of people, some in colorful costumes, plunge into the Elbe, it's Elbeschwimmen in Dresden. The traditional event took place for the 28th time on Sunday. The swimmers covered a distance of 3.5 kilometers with the current of the river at a water temperature of 21.5 degrees.
The Elbe Swim is becoming increasingly popular, said the event's chief organizer, Daniel Baumann. The organizers are not aiming for record numbers of participants. "But you can see people's increasing enthusiasm. They come by themselves, we don't need to do so much advertising."
Last year, exactly 1,914 people took part in the Elbe Swim. According to the organizers, the youngest swimmers are usually around eight years old and swim with their parents. The oldest participants are over 80 years old and remain loyal to the Elbe Swim.
