Porsche will build a second SUV model at its Leipzig plant. The Executive Board and Supervisory Board have now decided to produce the vehicle, known internally as the M1, at the plant in Saxony, Porsche announced. It should roll off the production line at the end of the decade. The "Leipziger Volkszeitung" had previously reported.
The new model is to be launched on the market as a combustion engine or plug-in hybrid. Alongside the electric Macan, it will be the second SUV from Leipzig.
"By awarding the contract to the Leipzig site, we are also strengthening the competitiveness and flexibility of the site," explained Production Director Albrecht Reimold. Plant Manager Gerd Rupp spoke of a strong signal for Leipzig.
Details on possible investments in the plant and a more precise timetable could not be given at present, it was said. Porsche currently builds the Panamera and Macan models in Leipzig.
