A car journey of more than 1,000 kilometers, prominent fans like Messi and Müller: What makes Leipzig's new signing Brajan Gruda special.

Qualifying for the European Cup, gaining self-confidence and seizing the mini-opportunity for the World Cup: New signing Barjan Gruda has clearly outlined his goals for his six-month stint at RB Leipzig. "Of course I want to go to the World Cup, but the performance has to be right," said the 21-year-old. Gruda has not yet played an international match, but was allowed to join the training camp ahead of the 2024 European Championship at home.

Due to the prolonged absence of Assan Ouédraogo, Leipzig loaned Gruda from Brighton & Hove Albion. And his currently injured teammate is the best example of how quickly things can happen when it comes to the DFB squad. Ouédraogo made his debut in November, scored against Slovakia and would probably have been involved in the international matches at the end of March had it not been for his knee injury.

In the car 100 kilometers to Leipzig

Gruda described himself as currently in top shape and is ready for the starting eleven for the match at 1 FC Köln on Sunday (3.30 pm/DAZN). "I want to get as much playing time as possible and help the team for Europe," said the ex-Mainzer. Gruda last played in the Premier League in mid-January.

For the move to Leipzig on the last day of the winter transfer window, Gruda took on a car journey of more than 1000 kilometers. "It all happened very quickly and a friend was with me. I knew I needed a few things for six months," said Gruda. "So I filled up the car and set off."

Honoring Messi

The talented left-footer already has some prominent fans. After a match with Mainz against FC Bayern Munich, Thomas Müller was keen to swap shirts with Gruda - and proudly showed off the coveted piece on Instagram afterwards.

In October last year, Lionel Messi was finally asked to name the greatest talents in world soccer as part of a sponsorship campaign. And Gruda also ended up on the world champion's list. "I'm a huge fan of Messi. I used to watch his games when I was little," said Gruda, describing Messi's selection as an "honor".
