In the Elbe, under the remains of Dresden's Carola Bridge, lies a drop bed of ballast. The excavators are ready for trains A and B - now it's time to get started.

The still standing Train A of Dresden's Carola Bridge is due to come down this week. According to the town hall, its demolition will begin on Thursday on the east side of the central section. To do this, two large excavators will first destroy the asphalt of the roadway and the structural concrete of the roadway slab from above and expose the tensioning wires.

They will then change their tools and cut the steel wires with powerful shears until the bridge section falls. It is then to be placed on the drop pads that have been piled up over the past few days.

A 120-tonne long-arm excavator is being used, which can reach over both traffic trains with its 40-meter arm. A 70-ton excavator with a boom of around 25 meters is working alongside it on the Neustädter Ufer. "It is important that the work is well coordinated and carried out simultaneously on both sides of bridge train A," explained the city administration.

"Once train A has fallen, the same procedure is carried out on train B." Up to ten excavators are available to quickly remove the debris, break it up and load it onto trucks and tractors, which then drive it to the banks.
