In Saxony, as in Germany, over-indebtedness has increased again for the first time in years. According to the new "Debtor Atlas" published by credit agency Creditreform, around 8.2 percent of all adults in the state are over-indebted. In 2017, the over-indebtedness rate in Saxony reached 10 percent, since then it has fallen every year and has now risen by 0.2 percent. The rate is highest in Chemnitz (10.7 percent) and Leipzig (9.7 percent).
According to the data, around 275,000 adults in Saxony are over-indebted, compared to 272,000 adults in the previous year. Across Germany, around 5.67 million adults are over-indebted - an increase of two percent compared to 2024. As in Saxony, the rate was 8.2 percent and rose again for the first time since 2018.
Lowest rate in Bavaria
According to the data, Saxony is one of the five federal states with the lowest over-indebtedness rate. The rate is highest in Bremen at 12 percent and lowest in Bavaria at 6.1 percent.
Over-indebtedness occurs when a debtor is highly unlikely to be able to meet their payment obligations over a longer period of time. In addition, they have neither assets nor credit options available to cover their living expenses.
