During checks on the dilapidated Agra Bridge south of Leipzig, the police discovered a large number of violations of the weight and speed limit. In the period from 1 to 11 December, 69 drivers violated the ban on vehicles over 3.5 tons, according to the Leipzig police department. They face a fine of 100 euros. In addition, 210 drivers were reported to be speeding and will now have to pay a warning or fine.
However, the majority of drivers on the Bundesstraße 2 complied with the applicable limits. According to the police, almost 25,000 vehicles were recorded during the checks.
Damaged bridge under special observation
Since November 20, the bridge has only been open to restricted traffic due to damage. This means that only vehicles up to 3.5 tons are allowed to drive on it. This is intended to relieve the pressure on the structure. Because of the so-called Hennigsdorf prestressing steel used, which was also used in the collapsed Carola Bridge in Dresden, the Agra Bridge is one of 19 bridges in Saxony that are under special observation.
