Drivers were stuck in traffic jams on Saxony's freeways less often last year, but for longer. In 2025, 15,904 traffic jams were reported, compared to 18,064 in 2024, according to ADAC Saxony. In contrast, 22,866 kilometers of congestion were recorded, a good 1,600 more than in 2024. The number of hours of congestion increased by twelve percent year-on-year.
Traffic disruptions and waiting times on the A4 in Saxony alone lasted almost 1,000 hours longer than in 2024. Travelers had to be patient the longest on the sections between the Pulsnitz (Bautzen district) and Siebenlehn (Central Saxony district) exits and between Bautzen Ost and Görlitz.
The longest traffic jam was 40 kilometers on the A4
The longest continuous traffic jam was registered on the A4 on 17 April 2025 with a length of 40 kilometers. This puts it in 5th place among nationwide congestion events. According to the ADAC, the day with the most traffic jams was the last day of the year. 99 traffic jams were reported in Saxony on December 31, 2025. On New Year's Eve, there were traffic jams over a total length of 512 kilometers in the state.
Increase expected in the current year
The ADAC expects the situation on the freeways to worsen further in the current year. A moderate increase in traffic volume will probably also lead to more traffic jams, according to the traffic club. In addition, the "urgently required extensive construction measures to modernize hundreds of dilapidated freeway bridges" will also cause additional obstructions. However, there is no alternative to making the freeway network fit for the future.
