The Leipzig City Tunnel is being modernized to make it barrier-free. A total of eleven escalators and five elevators are being replaced in the Bayerischer Bahnhof, Wilhelm-Leuschner-Platz and Markt stations, as announced by Deutsche Bahn. Construction will mainly take place at night so as not to disrupt regular train services.
Eight escalators are planned at Wilhelm-Leuschner-Platz to overcome the 20-meter height difference. According to the railroad company, the station will have Europe's longest escalators at 55 meters, each with a moving central platform. The work should be completed by the end of this year and cost around 12.5 million euros.
