Technology

Turning brick rubble and mining waste into a building material that insulates, does not burn and can be recycled again and again. Researchers at TU Bergakademie Freiberg have done exactly that. Their manufacturing process has now been granted a European patent.

When intelligent greenhouses can explain their decisions

Smart control systems can save energy and resources. But when nobody understands how they make decisions, trust quickly disappears and operators may switch them off. Researchers at Chemnitz University of Technology have developed a new AI-based approach to make these systems more transparent. Their work has now been accepted at one of the world's leading conferences on artificial intelligence. | more

Layering steel: TU Chemnitz prints giant components

A joint project is developing a process to build up large steel parts layer by layer - cheaper, faster and more resource-efficient than before. | more

| more

The sensors that simply dissolve

Magnetic field sensors can be found in almost every device we use every day. But many contain problematic metals such as nickel or cobalt. Researchers at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf have now developed printed sensors made from iron, cellulose and beeswax that can later dissolve in a controlled way. | more

Recycling with AI: How old washing machines are dismantled

Just throw away old washing machines? That may soon no longer be necessary. Researchers at Chemnitz University of Technology have developed a station that guides workers through the dismantling of appliances step by step using AI and digital instructions. Why this matters for the circular economy — and how far the technology has already come. | more

Smaller, faster, smarter: Researchers develop new chip architecture

Chips are in almost everything we use every day. But how do you make them even more powerful without making them bigger? Researchers at the Fraunhofer IPMS in Dresden have taken a decisive step. They embed tiny chip components in silicon so precisely that a compact overall system is created - with a huge impact for AI, smartphones and more. | more

| more

Science fiction made in Dresden: TU Dresden opens a holodeck

A factory hall, an operating theater, a foreign city — all of it virtual, and all of it at TU Dresden. The university’s new holodeck allows several people to experience the same digital world at once. At the same time, a newly opened quantum lab is exploring how future communication networks could become faster and more secure. | more

When atoms dance: Researchers observe angular momentum in crystals

When atoms in a crystal rotate, they follow the same laws of nature as a carousel. But at the atomic level, something unusual happens: the angular momentum can reverse direction. Physicists from Dresden have now observed this effect directly for the first time — providing new insight into a physics question that has puzzled researchers for more than 100 years. | more

| more

Between two diamonds: New insights into extreme superconductors

Whenever electricity flows through a cable, some energy is lost as heat. Superconductors could one day change that. In these materials, electricity flows without resistance. Researchers at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf have now examined a particularly promising class of superconductors under extreme pressure for the first time — using miniature magnetic lenses smaller than a human hair. | more

Cleaner batteries: Dresden researchers explore solvent-free coating

Batteries are everywhere. But their production can be energy-intensive and relies on chemicals that are under environmental scrutiny. Researchers at the Fraunhofer IWS in Dresden are working with colleagues from Taiwan to change this. Their goal is a new manufacturing method that reduces the need for problematic chemicals and lowers energy consumption. | more

| more

Freiberg-built diving robot inspects dam walls

A robot dives where humans can hardly reach: along the underwater sides of dam walls. Researchers at TU Bergakademie Freiberg have developed it to detect cracks earlier, reduce costs, and improve water safety. | more

New defense and cyber research hub opens in Leipzig

Cyberattacks, disinformation, hybrid warfare — modern threats are often invisible and difficult to detect. In Leipzig, the Fraunhofer Institute for Communication, Information Processing and Ergonomics is now researching how such risks can be identified and countered at an early stage. At the same time, a new Saxon research network is bringing together 18 institutions to work on security and resilience. | more

Leipzig’s AI computing center set for completion by 2028

A new AI computing center is set to be built on the site of Leipzig’s former trade fair grounds. Planning has now been completed, and construction is expected to be finished by 2028. The project is intended to strengthen research infrastructure and support cooperation across Leipzig’s scientific and economic region. | more
