Will the long-planned electrification of the rail link from Dresden to Görlitz fall by the wayside? Saxony wants to use money from the special fund for this. But is the Free State allowed to do this?

The Greens are demanding clarity on the electrification of the railroad line from Dresden to Görlitz. "The state government may have miscalculated with the expectation of financing the electrification with the help of the special fund," explained Katja Meier, member of the state parliament, referring to a report in the "Dresdner Neueste Nachrichten". According to the report, there is to be no money from the special fund for projects that began before 2025.

Back in 2003, Germany and Poland agreed on the continuous electrification of the Wroclaw - Wegliniec - Görlitz - Dresden rail link. However, the project was rather sidelined by the federal government.

Affected is a good 100-kilometer stretch from Dresden to the national border. Poland has long since completed the electrification. As there was little movement in Berlin, Saxony pushed ahead with planning at its own expense. This could now take its revenge.

Greens call for changes to the draft bill on financing

Meier is calling on the state government to lobby the federal government for the necessary changes to the draft of the corresponding financing law for the special fund. "It is unacceptable that projects whose planning began before 2025 are excluded from funding. The consequences would be fatal - not only for the Dresden-Görlitz electrification, but also for many cycle paths whose planning has long been underway and which should be financed from the fund."
