Tens of thousands of visitors are expected to attend the "Kosmos" festival in Chemnitz this weekend. The center is the area around the Schlossteich, but there are also numerous satellite locations spread across the city. The festival starts today. The organizers are talking about around 300 program items spread over three days. Workshops, discussions and sports activities are planned; the concerts are traditionally the main crowd-pullers.
The pop band Juli ("Geile Zeit", "Perfekte Welle"), the group Deine Freunde and the singer-songwriter Ami Warning are expected to perform on Saturday. On Friday evening, the indie pop trio Blond will be performing together with the Robert Schumann Philharmonic Orchestra on Theaterplatz. Tickets are already sold out. Athletes can also be seen on a number of slacklines stretching more than 1.1 kilometers across the city - for example at the Schlosskirche church and between the climbing center at Konkordia Park and the Ermafa Passage.
Numerous closures - travel by bus and train recommended
The "Kosmos" festival is part of Chemnitz's program as European Capital of Culture. It goes back to the #wirsindmehr concert following right-wing extremist riots in 2018. Last year, it attracted 70,000 people in just one day.
During the festival, numerous roads are closed in Chemnitz. Due to the limited number of parking spaces and multi-storey parking lots in the city center and the expected traffic disruptions, it is recommended to use buses and trains to get to and from the festival, according to the city administration. Services will be extended on a number of lines, such as the rail connection from Dresden via Chemnitz to Zwickau and Hof and the rail lines from Chemnitz to Riesa and Leipzig.
