Fast start to construction after surprising demolition: The new B101 bridge is now being built in Großenhain - and traffic should be moving again as early as 2026.

Almost eight months after the demolition of the bridge on the B101 federal highway near Großenhain (Meißen district), the new construction has officially begun. "Here in Großenhain, we are showing what is possible," said State Secretary Barbara Meyer. The rapid start of construction was "the result of exemplary cooperation between the federal government, district, municipality, railroad, planning office, demolition company and our road construction administration".

The mayor of Großenhain thanked all those involved. "The new construction of the bridge is the decisive prerequisite for ensuring that traffic on the B 101 can soon flow smoothly again - in the interests of motorists, local public transport and, above all, the regional economy."

Completion planned for 2026

Completion is already planned for October 2026. During the construction work, the Dresden-Berlin railroad line will have to be temporarily closed under the bridge. Unlike its predecessor, the 53-metre-long and 14-metre-wide structure will also have a cycle path.

The old bridge was demolished within a few days last December. A special inspection had shown that the structure could no longer be opened to traffic. The condition of the bridge, existing cracks and samples taken had shown that the load-bearing capacity was at risk, according to the State Office for Road Construction and Transport. Since then, traffic has been rerouted. Like the Carola Bridge in Dresden, which partially collapsed in September 2024, the structure was a prestressed concrete bridge with Hennigsdorf steel.
