After a decline in the previous year, the number of new e-cars in Saxony is rising again significantly. What manufacturers and experts have to say about the change.

After a dip last year, demand for electric cars in Saxony is increasing noticeably again. From January to July, 6,677 battery-powered electric vehicles (BEV) were newly registered in the state - an increase of more than 2,500 compared to the same period last year. This is according to the latest figures from the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA). In July alone, there were 895 electric cars.

This indicates a trend reversal: in 2024, new registrations of electric cars collapsed after the abrupt end of state subsidies, with only 7,801 new electric cars in the statistics for the year as a whole. Previously, registration figures had been significantly higher for years - 11,889 in 2023, 10,663 in 2022 and 9,078 in 2021.

Manufacturers see tailwind for e-cars

At the same time, manufacturers in Bavaria are reporting the growing importance of electromobility. Porsche spoke of a "successful ramp-up" at the Leipzig site. "In the first half of 2025, almost 60 percent of the Macan models delivered were fully electric," the car manufacturer announced. The model series also increased by 15 percent overall.

BMW also referred to the development at its Leipzig plant. "In general, we are seeing an increasing proportion of fully electric vehicles, which now account for over a third of production," said a spokesperson. However, a comparison with the previous year is difficult, as production of the only fully electric vehicle - the Mini Countryman - did not start until March 2024.

Volkswagen also announced that the Group "expects a slightly higher production figure" than last year.

"The future belongs to e-mobility" - experts praise change

"We have always said that the future belongs to e-mobility," emphasized Jens Katzek, Managing Director of the Automotive Cluster East Germany (ACOD). The eastern German locations and suppliers have undergone a "remarkably rapid transformation", the technology has developed further and the infrastructure has also improved. Incentives to buy are "also right and necessary in the future, because new technologies often need a boost and incentives, even in the medium term".

The ADAC Saxony sees technical progress as the main driver of development - especially the increased range. "There will certainly not be just one aspect that has led to new registrations rising again," explained the automobile club. However, for more people to make the switch, even greater ranges, shorter charging times, a denser network of charging stations and lower prices are needed.
