In Saxony, more people have once again been infected with the flu. Last week, there were just under 2,000 cases of influenza - a good sixth more than in the previous week, according to the latest weekly report from the State Health and Veterinary Investigation Institute (LUA).
Leipzig with most infections
Infections were mainly diagnosed in small children and schoolchildren, but all age groups are affected. Clusters are reported from daycare centers, schools and occasionally hospitals. The highest number of cases was reported in Leipzig (357), the lowest in the district of North Saxony (77).
Since the start of the season on September 29, six people aged between 68 and 93 have died from flu infections in Saxony. Four women and two men were affected. The two oldest deceased women (aged 88 and 93) had been vaccinated against influenza in the current season.
Fewer people falling ill with coronavirus
Meanwhile, coronavirus infections have fallen for the first time this season. Last week, 994 cases were registered. That was almost a quarter fewer than in the previous week. Most of those infected are still senior citizens.
A few outbreaks were reported from hospitals and retirement and nursing homes. The highest number of cases was also reported in Leipzig (142), the lowest in the Vogtland district (39). Since the start of the season, 44 people aged between 64 and 99 have died from Covid-19, including 31 men.
