Saxony's largest city, Leipzig, is planning savings of 27.5 million euros over the next two years. This is a prerequisite for approval of the budget by the Free State, as this is the only way for the city to remain financially viable, according to a statement. For the 2025 financial year, the city is aiming to make savings of around 7.5 million euros, while next year the budget is to be cut by around 20 million euros.
The municipalities in Germany are facing the worst financial crisis since the Second World War, said Leipzig's Lord Mayor Burkhard Jung. "The cuts to the budget are necessary if we want to continue to shape things ourselves in Leipzig," emphasized the SPD politician.
Large items for the coming year are the allocations to the opera, theatre and Gewandhaus (minus 914,200 euros). Refugee accommodation and the elimination of the second school social work position would each save 1.4 million euros.
