Saxony's households are almost completely connected to centralized wastewater systems. At the end of 2023, the proportion was 92 percent, compared to 56 percent in 1990, according to the Ministry of the Environment. The conversion of wastewater treatment plants for environmentally friendly and resource-saving wastewater management has now also been implemented almost across the board. The wastewater of 99.8 percent of Saxony's inhabitants is treated using state-of-the-art technology.
Data on the treatment performance of more than 680 municipal wastewater treatment plants was collected for the "Status Report on Municipal Wastewater Disposal and Sewage Sludge Disposal" by the Saxon State Environment Agency.
However, there is still a need for action to expand the wastewater infrastructure in Saxony, it said. This included the further reduction of nutrient inputs, the modernization of rainwater discharges and the development of new technologies.
