Leipzig Zoo is looking for a name for its koala offspring. The secret of the cub's gender has been revealed, the zoo announced. It is therefore a female. Now it's up to interested animal lovers to find a name. Suggestions can be submitted on the zoo's website until January 19.
The six-month-old offspring of the koalas Erlinga and Yuma is reportedly developing well. The young female is already leaving her mother's pouch and carefully nibbling on the eucalyptus, according to the zoo.
Koalas are not bears
Koalas are tree dwellers with excellent climbing skills. Because the eucalyptus leaves they feed on are hard to digest and low in nutrients, they move very little. According to the zoo, they sleep or rest for a total of 18 to 20 hours a day. And: koalas are not bears, even if they are occasionally referred to as koala or marsupial bears. They are marsupials and distant relatives of kangaroos.
