Following a confirmed case of bird flu, around 30,000 turkeys have to be killed in a facility near Geithain. What protective measures now apply in the district of Leipzig.

A bird flu outbreak at a turkey fattening facility near Geithain (district of Leipzig) has resulted in around 30,000 animals having to be killed. This decision was made in consultation between the livestock owner, the veterinary office of the district of Leipzig and the Saxon Animal Disease Task Force, the district office announced. The Friedrich Loeffler Institute had previously confirmed the virus.

The veterinary office is now setting up a protection zone with a radius of three kilometers. In addition, a surveillance zone with a radius of ten kilometers is in place. Special protective measures apply in these zones with immediate effect, such as compulsory stabling, reporting obligations and hygiene rules.
