Persistent drought and low water had recently slowed down the excursion steamers in Dresden. Now a few more ships can set sail again.

The Elbe is carrying a little more water again - and the Weiße Flotte in Dresden can offer more excursions. The company has announced that it will be resuming its cruises from Dresden to Pillnitz from Saturday. They recently had to be suspended due to the low water level of the Elbe.

"The current water level makes it possible for our ships to safely pass a shallower section near Laubegast again," explained Jochen Haubold, the fleet's Nautical Director. The three-hour trips to the castles are scheduled up to four times a day.

Hoping for rising water levels

There are also city trips in Dresden. A steamer also runs daily except Mondays between Dresden and Seußlitz, and two steamers operate in Saxon Switzerland between Pirna and Bad Schandau. Further connections between Dresden and Meißen as well as Pillnitz and Pirna are to be resumed as soon as the water levels in the river allow.

The water level in the Elbe had dropped dramatically due to the prolonged drought. At the beginning of July, just 58 centimetres were measured in Dresden. The normal average water level there is 149 centimetres. According to an overview by the State Flood Control Center, it is currently around 80 centimetres.
