Black lace, shrill outfits and a touch of the Middle Ages: the Wave-Gotik-Treffen starts in Leipzig with 200 bands, Kim Wilde as a surprise guest and a picnic in the park.

The black scene will meet again in Leipzig at Whitsun. Up to 20,000 guests from Germany and abroad are expected at the 33rd Wave-Gotik-Treffen (WGT), emphasized festival spokesman Cornelius Brach. Until Monday, they can attend concerts by scene stars, experience a medieval market or come together in the "Pagan Village".

According to the organizers, more than 200 artists have confirmed their participation in this year's WGT. Many concerts will take place on the Agra grounds. The Felsenkeller, the Gewandhaus, the Täubchenthal and the Moritzbastei are also integrated into the WGT program. Music from all genres of the dark scene will be on offer - including gothic rock, electro, dark wave, medieval rock and industrial.

Icons of the 1980s will be there

The "Einstürzende Neubauten" and 80s icon Kim Wilde will be there for the first time. "She will be a splash of color in the otherwise rather dark scene," said Brach. Tickets are still available at the box office.

The event kicks off on Friday afternoon with the Victorian Picnic in Clara Zetkin Park. Hundreds of people gather there to eat, drink and chat. Many of them wear spectacular outfits. The elaborate costumes also attract many interested people who simply come to the park to look and take photos.
