Cesc Fàbregas has fueled speculation about a possible move to the Bundesliga as a coach with cryptic statements. The Spaniard said at the weekend after his Italian first division club Como's 3-1 win over Cagliari: "Whatever happens, I will always be grateful to the club for what it has given me. I am very proud of what has been built around Como. I want to leave a legacy when I leave. Whoever comes after me will find a strong club."
The 2010 World Cup winner and two-time European champion was asked about his future and the role emotions played in the decision - Como has been the biggest surprise of the Serie A season under Fàbregas. "When the moment comes, we'll announce something."
Fàbregas shapes Como into a surprise team
When asked if that was already a farewell speech, the 38-year-old replied: "No, no, I've always said that." The Spaniard had joined Como as a player in 2022 and took over as head coach after the team was promoted to the first division in the summer of 2024.
With two matchdays to go, the underdogs are in tenth place in the table and thus in the top half of the standings. The club recently won six games in a row and Fàbregas was voted coach of the month for April. He still has a contract at Lake Como until 2028.
However, the ex-professional has recently been the subject of intense courtship. According to a media report from Como, for example, the bosses of Bayer Leverkusen were already negotiating with the coach, who had made a good impression. After it recently became official that Xabi Alonso would be leaving the Werkself in the summer, those responsible announced a successor "in due course".
Leverkusen and Leipzig looking for new coaches
In addition to Leverkusen, RB Leipzig are also looking for a new coach for the coming season. According to reports, Fàbregas is one of the Saxons' preferred candidates for the coaching job.
