SC Magdeburg has preserved its title chances in the German Handball League. The German champions won 34:23 (16:12) at relegation-threatened HC Erlangen and temporarily took the lead in the table with 51 points. However, the SCM is dependent on support. This Thursday, the Füchse Berlin will play against MT Melsungen (both 50 points), who are level on points. The winner will overtake Magdeburg.
Magdeburg, whose best scorers were Omar Magnusson (9/3 goals), Gisli Kristjansson (8) and Tim Hornke (7), got off to a commanding start with a 5:2 lead (10th minute). However, Erlangen did not allow itself to be shaken off and closed the gap to 5:6 after fifteen minutes. There was then a clear advantage at goalkeeper, where SCM keeper Sergey Hernandez (10 saves) was easily the better player against the former Magdeburg player Dario Quenstedt. As a result, the visitors pulled 11:6 ahead in the 20th minute.
The SCM was also the dominant team after the break. Philipp Weber opened up a ten-goal lead after 55 minutes. Magdeburg then played it out with aplomb.
