The initial reception facilities for refugees in Saxony are barely half full. Of around 4,600 places in Leipzig, Chemnitz and Dresden, only just under 1,800 were occupied at the beginning of July, according to the state directorate. The initial reception facilities consist of different accommodations in the respective regions.
The majority of the residents were asylum seekers. Around 290 people from Ukraine were also accommodated in the facilities.
The number of refugees has been falling continuously since the end of 2023. In 2024, a total of 10,120 asylum seekers were accommodated in Saxony's initial reception facilities. In 2023, there were still more than twice as many people at 23,132.
Capacities continue to decrease
Capacities in the initial reception facilities have continued to decrease compared to the end of 2024. At the end of December, there were still around 5,000 places. In 2023, almost 9,200 places were still available - at that time also partly in residential containers and tents.
The Free State continues to hold emergency capacities that can be activated at short notice in case the number of refugees increases again. The current number of these places is a good 1,900.
